Champion of the Public Health Laboratory Award

The Association of Public Health Laboratories invites its membership to nominate individuals for the Champion of the Public Health Laboratory Award.  This award recognizes federal, state and local elected officials and executive branch employees who have recognized the importance of state and local governmental laboratories that perform testing of public health significance either through support of legislation or federal agency decisions.  The work for which they are being nominated should have occurred within the past two years.

Formal recognition of the APHL Champion of the Public Health Laboratory Award will be presented at an awards luncheon at the Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 6-9, 2010.

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominators must be a member of APHL.
  • Nominees may be key policy makers or those who have recently left public service.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated their commitment to public health laboratories by advancing legislation or agency decision making with the specific goal of improving public health laboratory operations.
  • Nominees must have a record of collaboration with APHL and its members.
  • The Membership and Recognition Committee and the Director of Public Policy will review all nominations; its recommendation will be considered and decided upon by the Board of Directors.
  • Nominations are judged solely on the material submitted.


Nomination Directions

Please describe the nominee’s accomplishments, using the points below as a guide. Be as specific as possible, but do not exceed 500 words. Bullet points are acceptable. The committee cannot consider any qualification or achievement that is not included in the nomination materials.

  • Discuss the nominee's support of public health laboratories, specifically including all legislation (including amendments to legislation) or agency decision making that benefited or would benefit public health laboratories.
  • Discuss the nominee's requests for APHL member involvement in Congressional hearings, agency deliberations or other opportunities for input on specific proposals that have benefited or would benefit public health laboratories.
  • Provide examples of the nominee's leadership on specific topics that are critical to public health laboratory operations, and provide references to statements or other documents that demonstrate leadership.
  • Include the complete name, address, email and phone number of both the nominee and the nominator.
