Thomas E. Maxson Education, Training and Workforce Development Award

The Association of Public Health Laboratories invites nominations for the Thomas E. Maxson Education, Training and Workforce Development Award.  This award is given to an APHL member who is a public health or clinical laboratory practitioner, trainer or educator who has made significant contributions to public health laboratory practice by creating, delivering or developing continuing education opportunities, programs, policies or practices for the laboratory community.  This award was established by APHL in 1998 in memory of Dr. Thomas Maxson, in honor of his long time support for continuing education and workforce development in the public health laboratory community.

Formal recognition of the Maxson award will be in the form of a plaque and a complimentary registration to an APHL or NLTN sponsored event with a reimbursement for travel costs.  The award will be presented at an awards luncheon at the Annual Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 6-9, 2010.

Nomination Requirements

  • Nominees must be a member of APHL or an employee of a member laboratory.
  • An individual may not be self-nominated.
  • The Membership and Recognition Committee will review all nominations; its recommendation will be considered and decided upon by the Board of Directors.
  • Members of the Membership and Recognition Committee and Board of Directors may be nominated or make nominations.  Neither nominators nor nominees may participate in deliberations for these awards.
  • Nominations are judged solely on the material submitted.


Nomination Directions

  • Include the name, degrees, address, email, and phone number of the nominee.
  • Include your complete name, address, email and phone number.
  • Discuss the nominee’s contribution to public health laboratory practice by creating, delivering or developing continuing education opportunities, programs, policies or practices for the laboratory community.  Be as specific as possible, but do not exceed 500 words.

Rebecca Perdue, MT (ASCP)
Quality Assurance, Safety & Training Manager
Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services

In her role at the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (VDCLS), Perdue is primarily responsible for managing quality assurance, safety and training and serves as the State Training Coordinator. She has worked with various federal agencies, including the CDC and FBI, to provide laboratory training for individuals from around the country. Additionally, she partners on a regular basis with the National Laboratory Training Network to provide preparedness training to lab professionals in Virginia.

Perdue had a rich and varied career in the clinical arena prior to joining the VDCLS. She strives to bridge the gap between clinical laboratories and public health laboratories, a task she is uniquely prepared to do. She is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and has served the organization in many elective and appointed positions. including vice president and member of the board of directors. She is also active on the state level, having served as president of the Virginia Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. Perdue has been equally as committed to APHL, serving on numerous committees, including the APHL Training and Education Committee. She often represents the association at various meetings and just recently staffed an NLTN booth at the Clinical Laboratory Education Committee meeting.
