APHL, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, develops programs and resources to inform prospective public health laboratory scientists of career opportunities. Careers in public health laboratory science offer stimulating work that is never routine or monotonous and makes a real difference in people’s lives. Opportunities are available at all levels for those with the requisite training.

Current APHL career initiatives include:
• Outreach at public health career fairs to make students aware of professional opportunities.
• Sponsoring student participation in the APHL Annual Meeting, including keynote sessions and a reception with leaders in the field.
• Funding for states to develop and distribute materials on careers in public health labs.
• Creation of “Public Health Lab 101,” an online course that provides a window on the public health laboratory and situates it within the broader context of public health.
• Development of a model science expo to encourage high school and college students to enter the field of public health laboratory science.
