Additionally, APHL is creating a self-assessment manual, based on the national guidelines, for laboratories to evaluate their capacity and capability to conduct testing of food and clinical samples in connection with investigations of foodborne illness.

Using the self assessment tool, laboratories can measure themselves against the baseline and identify areas where they may be falling short.

By adressing guidelines of collaboration with state and federal partners, the assessment becomes a 360° tool that gauges the laboratory’s role in the entire public health laboratory system; a system that includes state and local public health and agricultural laboratorians, epidemiologists, environmental health practitioners and their federal counterparts.

The expansive view should promote collaboration among these key partners.
