In addition to the unidentified bacteria, viruses and other microbes causing illnesses, chemical contaminants in food can cause significant numbers of illness.

APHL supports efforts to expand chemical food testing capabilities in state and local public health laboratories and promotes active communication between public health laboratories that lack these capabilities and state agricultural and environmental laboratories that can provide this type of testing.
