CDC Guidance

Periodically the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention release updates and testing guidance pertaining to infectious diseases.  This page consolidates and summarizes those updates for laboratory professionals, and provides links to the appropriate resources.

Antimicrobial Resistance  

The June 25, 2010 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report describes the first reported Enterobacteriaceae isolates in the United States carrying a newly described antimicrobial resistance mechanism.  Please review the MMWR article to learn how this may impact future diagnostic evaluations and management of patients with carbapenem-resistant enteric isolates who had recent exposure to medical care in India or Pakistan.

Malaria

The March 13, 2009 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report includes an article about Plasmodium knowlesi, a simian species of malaria that caused an infection in a US traveler to the Philippines. Please see CDC’s malaria web page feature to learn how this may impact your future diagnostic evaluations and management of patients with malaria.
