Public health laboratories in the United States must respond to measles, mumps and whooping cough, even as they test for SARS, West Nile virus and avian influenza.
More outbreaks are expected, not fewer. Already new drug-resistant strains, antibiotic misuse and inadequate immunization are compounding challenges created by climate change and global migration. New technologies like molecular assays offer speed, specificity and sensitivity but are expensive. Yet classic techniques remain the gold standard for confirmation of many disease strains. The challenge is to preserve and enhance capabilities within tight budgets. Through its Emerging Infectious Diseases Program, APHL helps public health laboratories meet the challenge.
