Scientist performs antiretroviral drug resistance testing

APHL helped develop the first national algorithm for laboratory testing of HIV in the late 1980s. Now it collaborates with other health partners to update the guidelines to reflect newer and more accurate HIV diagnostic tests. Public health laboratories rely on these recommendations to identify the HIV virus.

WORLD AIDS DAY - December 1, 2009

December 1st Marks the 20th Anniversary of World AIDS Day.

On World AIDS Day, individuals and organizations such as APHL unite to remind everyone of the strides that have been made and the work that still needs to be done in the fight against the AIDS pandemic. APHL is taking this opportunity to recognize the many APHL members who continue to dedicate themselves to the detection and identification of the HIV virus in countries all around the world.

New Algorithms

Drafts of New HIV Testing Algorithms Unveiled

Drafts of new point-of-care and laboratory HIV testing algorithms were unveiled at the 2007 HIV Diagnostics Conference in December. Participants at the APHL-CDC conference presented data and provided input on the algorithms.

Federal Action

CMS Accepts APHL Proposal for Validation

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services accepted an APHL proposal to allow public health laboratories to perform a small scale validation of a serum-based HIV screening assay to test oral fluid specimens. This was done because the only FDA-approved oral fluid test was withdrawn from the market. The proposal will help public health laboratories continue oral fluid testing with minimal interruption.

Public Health Laboratories Role in HIV Diagnostics

Public health laboratories play an important role in treatment, prevention and control of HIV by quickly identifying the virus using state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures.

HIV Survey - PHL Diagnostic Testing

APHL surveyed public health laboratories in 2006 to assess their HIV diagnostic testing capability, capacity and practice. The survey demonstrated close adherence to current testing recommendations and guidelines.
