Antiretroviral drug resistance testing, Public Health Image Library, Centers for Disease Control#

APHL helped develop the first national algorithm for laboratory testing of HIV in the late 1980s. Now it collaborates with other health partners to update the guidelines to reflect newer and more accurate HIV diagnostic tests. Public health laboratories rely on these recommendations to identify the HIV virus.

Evaluating the HIV Testing Algorithms

Summary of the National PHL HIV Algorithm Conference Call

On August 19th, 2009, the APHL/CDC HIV Steering Committee convened a public health laboratory conference call to introduce the newly-proposed HIV testing algorithms - described in the Status Report - and to highlight some of the data needed to evaluate their performance. The complete presentation and call summary can be accessed online. A specialized data template was also introduced on the call for the collection of signal-to-cutoff values for specimens repeatedly screened by immunoassay. Laboratories interested in sharing data with APHL are encouraged to contact hiv.algorithm@aphl.org.
