Intestinal Protozoa: Amoebas that Parasitize Humans April 13, 2010
Intestinal and opportunistic free-living amoebas are some of the most difficult to distinguish by microscopy. However, the differential diagnosis of cysts and trophozoites is possible if careful measurements are taken, and if the trichrome and/or iron haematoxylin staining patterns of the cytoplasm, organelles and nuclei with their endosomes are performed. These traditional morphological attributes will be examined in detail, along with pertinent case histories to illustrate typical signs and symptoms, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of human amoebiasis. The course will include species of Entamoeba, Endolimax, Iodamoeba, and Blastocystis which are commonly found in the intestinal tract, as well as selected opportunistic amoebas from soil and water that may infect humans including Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia, Naegleria, and Sappinia. How to differentiate these pathogens from typical confounding artifacts eg. epithelial cells, fungal spores, macrophages, microsporidia, neutrophils and yeast will also be discussed.

Identifying Intestinal Flagellates and Apicomplexans May 4, 2010
The program will discuss the life-cycle, clinical samples and tests performed to identify flagellates, apicomplexans and a pathogenic ciliate that can parasitize the intestinal tract. Emphasis will be on the distinguishing morphological characteristics that allow identification through traditional staining and microscopy.

Who Should Attend:
These intermediate-level programs are appropriate for pathologists, residents, students, and laboratory scientists working in clinical, public health, and academic settings who have an interest in medical parasitology.
