8th Annual PulseNet Update Meeting
April 27 - 30, 2004
Holiday Inn on the Bay, San Diego, CA

Overview
Over 170 people attended the 8th annual PulseNet Update Meeting in San Diego, CA from April 27-30, 2004. The theme for the meeting was "PulseNet: Getting Connected." Presentations addressed strengthening surveillance activities with both epidemiologists and clinical laboratories, recent outbreaks and utilization of data in the National Database, PulseNet activities at federal food regulatory agencies, the development of standardized PulseNet protocols for dangerous pathogens, optimizing the PulseNet software and improving the quality of submitted data, progress made by PulseNet International and other surveillance networks, and research towards implementing next generation subtyping methods. Three break-out sessions facilitated interactions among the participants and generated ideas for further improvements to the PulseNet network, both locally and nationally.
