9th Annual PulseNet Update Meeting
May 9-11, 2005
Westin Seattle

Overview
Over 180 people attended the 9th annual PulseNet Update Meeting in Seattle, WA from May 9-11, 2005. The theme for the meeting, "PulseNet: Molecular Epidemiology in Action," reflected the scheduling of the First National Foodborne Epidemiologists Meeting concurrently with the PulseNet Update Meeting. Over 130 people attended the Foodborne Epidemiologists Meeting. Over 130 people attended the Foodborne Epidemiologists Meeting, the proceedings from which are posted at Proceedings from the First National Foodborne Epidemiologists Meeting.

At the joint plenary session that kicked off both meetings, epidemiologic standards for national food safety, legal implications of foodborne outbreaks, timelines for enteric disease investigations, and outcomes of cluster investigations in 2004 were discussed. The plenary was followed by a joint break out session during which laboratorians and epidemiologists discussed issues pertaining to laboratory practice, foodborne epidemiology practice and data management.

PulseNet presentations during the remainder of the meeting addressed selection and prioritization of subtyping activities, communication technologies in PulseNet, PFGE and next generation protocol validations, QA/QC initiatives at the national level, and interactions with other networks. A second laboratory break out session covered the topics of QA/QC initiatives at the state/local level, CLIA issues for PulseNet laboratories, and specific questions pertaining to state or local activities.
