APHL, working with CDC/GAP Mozambique and the Mozambique Ministry of Health, launched an integrated laboratory information system (LIS) at two pilot sites in Maputo, Mozambique in June. The LIS is a modification of a system developed in Ireland and is maintained via an Internet connection to the application provider. The pilot system provides patient and specimen registration, a central specimen centric database, interface with CD4, hematology and biochemistry instruments, reporting functions, QA functions and other standard tools for laboratory management. The system is maintained both by a local support vendor in Mozambique as well as the application provider who has a Portuguese fluent programmer on staff. Basic computer and LIS user training was provided by a local training company prior to launch of the system. A rollout of the system during 2007-2008 is planned to all provincial hospital laboratories and selected large district hospital laboratories. In addition, additional modules will be added to cover all testing services and a Wide Area Network will be installed to link the LIS local area networks. Each laboratory site has five to ten PC stations. During 2008, planning will be completed for implementation of user connectivity to the LIS to permit direct access of clinical providers to testing information for their patients and summary report data to authorized users at MOH and CDC. A specimen tracking and test reporting system is being developed to operate as a module in the LIS to support specimen referral activities between districts and provinces and between provinces and the national laboratory.
