Training & Fellowships

APHL Education and Training Department
APHL provides training opportunities outside of the traditional programs offered under the CDC cooperative agreement. In 2006, the Laboratory Learning Links series was created to provide bi-monthly teleconferences on relevant topics. Many of the courses are set up in series, such as Hepatitis A, B and C and a 3-part series offered on MRSA. The mission, like NLTN, is to improve laboratory practice, however, the APHL educational opportunities are broader and address needs of some of our newer member laboratories, such as the environmental laboratory and the agricultural laboratory. For more information, visit the APHL courses page

NLTN
The National Laboratory Training Network (NLTN) is a collaborative training system of APHL and CDC. Its mission is to improve laboratory practice of public health significance through quality continuing education. For more information, click here.

Fellowships
The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowship Program, sponsored by APHL and CDC, trains and prepares scientists for careers in public health laboratories and supports public health initiatives related to infectious disease research. The EID Advanced Laboratory Training Fellowship is a one-year program designed for bachelor’s or master’s level scientists, with emphasis on the practical application of technologies, methodologies and practices related to emerging infectious diseases. The EID Laboratory Research Fellowship is a two-year program designed for doctoral level (PhD, MD or DVM) scientists to conduct high-priority infectious diseases research. For more information, click here.

The Environmental Public Health (EPH) Laboratory fellowship is designed to accomplish one of CDC's defined prevention strategy goals of "strengthening local, state, and federal public health infrastructures to support surveillance and implement prevention and control programs." The EPH Laboratory Fellowship Program aims to attract and prepare laboratory scientists for careers in environmental public health. The fellowship program recruits and trains qualified candidates to support public health initiatives and provide opportunities for young scientists to gain experience in a public health laboratory. Traineeships
The Environmental Health Traineeship provides travel for current laboratory staff to attend relevant conferences or trainings, or short-term (1-6 week) specialized training in environmental health technology and testing methods at another state health department, NCEH/CDC or other state or federal agencies (such as ATSDR, EPA, NIEHS or NIOSH). Any APHL-member public health laboratory or any environmental health laboratory affiliated with an APHL member public health laboratory may apply to the program. For more information, click here.
