Online Learning Modules

Clinical Specimen Handling and Tracking 
This course consists of three modules that focus on the pre-analytical phase of the specimen handling lifecycle. Module one covers specimen labeling upon collection, module two covers transport and accessioning, and module three goes into more detail on accessioning by discussing laboratory data management. Available in English and French. Approximate time to complete course is 1 hour (~20 minutes per module); certificate of completion provided.

Scientific Writing: The Basics 
This course is offered in two formats: an online course and an in-person workshop. Each format covers the same topics: overview of the scientific writing process, manuscript preparation, and manuscript revision. Available in English; certificate of completion provided.

WHO Infectious Substances Shipping Training
This course is divided into modules addressing the classification, documentation, marking, labelling, packaging of infectious substances and the preparation of shipments requiring the use of dry ice. Available in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS) Influenza Training series
This three course training series covers Avian Influenza, General Influenza and pH1N1 2009 Influenza. Each individual modules is currently available through the CEIRS Online Training Portal and contains several e-learning lessons and a knowledge check to reinforce learning. Available in English.

Training Materials

Detection and Response to Novel Influenza
These training materials consist of didactic lectures, group exercises and a case study designed to facilitate a multi-sectoral discussion of a response to the detection of influenza virus of pandemic potential in poultry and human populations.

WHO Laboratory Quality Stepwise Implementation (LQSI) Tool
This tool, in the form of a website, provides a stepwise plan to guide medical laboratories towards implementing a quality management system in compliance with ISO 15189.

Standard Operating Procedures for Identification and Characterization of Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae
This manual contains standard operating procedures for the identification and characterization of bacterial meningitis pathogens from cerebrospinal fluid by culture. Available in English and French
