​APHL, in partnership with the CDC, has developed a series of free, interactive modules to promote competent, high quality laboratory diagnostics based on the latest testing technology and research. These short modules serve as an excellent introduction to STD diagnostics as well as a refresher for seasoned laboratorians. This set of training modules was fully updated in 2020-2021 to include current best practices, information and recommendations.

Each module is complemented by references and resources for additional learning opportunities. The modules and associated resources are useful tools for anyone interested in learning more about STD testing​​​. Please see below for a list of available modules and descriptions.

Access the Training Modules

The modules are now available in the APHL Learning Center (follow instructions below) but we have included a list of available modules and descriptions below for your awareness. 

Access the APHL Learning Center

You need to have an APHL account to access the APHL Learning Center. If you do not have an account, you will need to create a free APHL account (using your work email address). Contact admin.sp@aphl.org with any login or account questions. 

Once you have an APHL Account:

  1. Na viga te to the APHL Learning Center.
  2. S elect Sign In to APHL Learning Center using your APHL Username and Password. 
  3. Once logged in, My Learning Center will be displayed.
  4. Next, under the Course Catalog header, select Search.
  5. All courses will display in the Course Catalog or you may specifically Search for the courses below. 
  6. Use the Search Bar to find the desired course(s) or learning plan(s) for the interested topic and click Enroll.​

Neisseria gonorrhoe​​ae

​​Etest®: Antimicrobi​​al Susceptibility Testing for Neisseria gonorrhoeae
This module provides an overview of the basics of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea, presents a summary of antimicrobial susceptibility testing for N. gonorrhoeae and describes clear instructions for proper setup and interpretation of Etest® for N. gonorrhoeae.

History and B​ackground
This module presents an overview of syphilis, the history of syphilis, basic epidemiology, disease burdens and diagnostic challenges.

Serology and Algorithms
This module provides an overview of nontreponemal and treponemal tests and testing algorithms as well as their strengths and challenges.

Serology Case Studies
This module presents four self-paced interactive case studies for the user to work through.
