​The NewSTEPs project provides quality improvement initiatives, an innovative data repository and technical resources for state newborn screening programs.

APHL NewSTEPs

APHL developed the NewSTEPs weekly series in response to feedback from newborn screening stakeholders and a critical review of requests on the NewSTEPs listserv. A recent “Did You Know?” feature on Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) used an interactive map to demonstrate that newborn screening for SCID is required by law or rule and fully implemented in 29 states.* Another three states* have laws or rules in place and are working toward full implementation. Eleven receive support for SCID newborn screening implementation from a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Cooperative Agreement to APHL.
