About our Training Needs Assessments

TNAs are a systematic way to evaluate training and educational needs for public health laboratory employees and identify the best solutions. We use this information to tailor our training programs and resources to address specific gaps in knowledge, skills and competencies, and help us refine and share valuable existing resources that may have been missed.

IDENTIFYING NEEDS AS THE ARISE

Real-time TNA

The Real-time TNA allows us to rapidly listen, learn and create valuable training that meets the moment. The inputs directly shape future APHL training offerings and resources, and help our members, partners and decision-makers visualize and analyze training needs at a glance.

Snapshot TNAs

About the Snapshot TNA Surveys

Prior to the implementation of the Real-time TNA, we conducted regular TNA surveys that provided a snapshot of the technical and scientific skills of laboratory professionals, as well as essential leadership skills. TNA surveys were conducted in 2018, 2020 and 2023/2024.

The assessments were conducted through brief and easy-to-complete surveys.

Recognizing the challenge of reaching every individual laboratory staff and managing responses, for the scientific surveys, we targeted program managers and supervisors to complete the assessments on behalf of their staff.

For TNAs focused on essential leadership skills, we targeted individual laboratory staff across the membership, with additional promotion through the new Laboratory Leaders of Today program, Emerging Leaders Program and their alumni, and the Regional Consortia
